In an effort to force customers to upgrade to thier new Office product, Microsoft took a particularly high handed (but for them not a surprising) approach. They blocked access to older file formats, including some of their own! Experts have been saying for years that proprietary file formats put you at the mercy of the vendor that controls the format.
